Gosling hats:

You need a set of four double pointed size one needles. For yarn I use Plymouth Galway in orange, gold, and rust.

Cast on 30 stitches in orange. Join.
K1P1 for one row.
Knit four rows plain.
Change to gold.
Knit five rows plain in gold.
Decrease:
K3 k2tog around.
Knit one row plain.
K2 k2tog around.
Knit one row plain.
K1 k2tog around.
Knit one row plain.
K2tog around.
Break off yarn leaving an eight inch tail. Pull tight, run yarn through remaining stitches, pull tight again, pull through into the inside of hat, and weave in end. Trim. Weave in any remaining ends.

Earflaps:
Pick up six stitches in red.
Knit across. On wrong side, k1 purl 4 k1. Repeat these two rows twice more, for a total of six rows.
On the next row, right side, k3, k2tog, k3.
Next row, k1, purl 3, k1.
Next row, k1, slip two knitwise, knit one, pass slipped stitches over, then knit one.
Next row, slip two knitwise, knit one, pass slipped stitches over. This will leave you with one stitch.
Pull the yarn through to leave three long tails. Knot, or else braid and then knot.
Repeat on opposite side of the brim for the other earflap.

Pompom:
Cut foot long lengths of each color. Split each piece of yarn into pairs of two strands. (Galway comes with four plies.) Lay one pair of plies of gold flat.
Take one pair of plies of each color together and wrap them around something handy like two fingers. Cut the resulting coil of strands on each side and lay them flat on the piece of gold you had ready. Boy this is hard to explain!
Repeat as needed. You will end up with a stack of short pieces of two-ply strands about an inch long, piled up about an inch high. When there's enough, tie it tightly with the long piece of gold, in a double knot, and then trim the fluffy bits into a pompom. You'll know if you haven't used enough, or haven't tied it tight enough, because it will bunch out into two sides with a part in
the middle, instead of being a round fluffy ball. When it's good (keep trying! you have plenty of yarn!) run the long ends of gold into the top of the hat and tie securely inside.

Voila! Gosling hat!

Now knit two more. : )
