Use Lamb's Pride bulky in Lemon Drop, Autumn Harvest, and Prairie Fire.
Cast on 76 stitches in Autumn Harvest on 9.5 needles, or whatever gets you a gauge of 22 inches around.
Join.
K2P2 rib for three rows.
Knit 12 rows plain.
Switch to Lemon Drop.
Knit 16 rows plain.
Then start your decreases: (k6 k2tog, k7 k2tog) and repeat between () until end of row.
Knit one row plain.
Then decrease again, k5 k2tog, k6 k2tog.
Repeat the plain row and the decrease row, always decreasing with one fewer stitch between decreases per row, until you
get down to so few you have to knit 2 together all the way around.
Break yarn, run through stitches, weave in the end.
Pick up 17 stitches in Prairie Fire. Knit plain except for the first and last two stitches, which are garter.
Knit 17 rows plain and then do a mitred double decrease in the center on the knit row.
Purl a row.
Again do a mitred double decrease in the center of the knit row.
Repeat until you have the two garter stitches, 7 stitches, and two more garter stitches. In that knit row, k2 garter,
k2tog, mitred double decrease, k2tog, k2 garter.
Decrease after that with mitred double decreases in the center until you're down to one stitch.
Pull yarn through so that you have three long tails, cut, and braid. Repeat for other side. (I put it on to find where
the left earflap should go--they are not evenly spaced.)
Make a pompom using all colors, trim, and secure to top.
Weave in all ends, and voila! A Jayne hat!
It will be kind of big and goofy looking, like the original. It's very comfortable, not tight.
